DEXA Bone Densitometry

DEXA Scan - Bone Density Scan

What is Dexa?

Bone density scanning, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) or bone densitometry, is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. DEXA is today's established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD).

Why would I be asked to have a Dexa Scan exam?

  • To help your physician in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.
  • To assess your risk for developing fractures. Emphasis is placed on the spine and hips, which are weight-bearing areas that are more susceptible to fractures.

What should I do to prepare for a Dexa Scan?

Please do not take any multi-vitamins or calcium supplements within 48 hours before your exam.

What should I expect?

DEXA Bone Density testing is quick and painless. You will be escorted by our technologist to the procedure room where you will be asked to lie down. The technologist will make you as comfortable as possible while maintaining the integrity of the study performed.

The arm of the equipment will pass quietly above your body several times as it generates x-ray images on the computer system it is controlled by. The entire procedure lasts only about 25 minutes.

What about after my Dexa Scan?

You may resume normal activity and begin taking your multi-vitamin and calcium supplement.
