We all know what Zika is in Florida. Zika has been making its way through Miami and now has been found in other states around the nation as well. The best way to protect yourself from Zika is to avoid getting bitten by a mosquito. We all know this is better said than done, but there are some easy ways to protect you and your family.
The one act that comes to mind that is used to avoid Zika is using bug spray. However, bug spray needs to be used correctly. Bug spray should be used when outdoors for a prolonged period of time, and should always be applied after sunscreen. Along with this, people usually make the mistake of applying repellent under clothes. This is unnecessary and the repellent ends up rubbing onto the fabric of your clothes. Also, don’t forget to put repellent on your ankles and feet, especially because the type of mosquitos that transmit Zika are usually attracted to the feet. Another way to repel mosquitos is with your clothes. They say that long pants and sleeves work fine, except for yoga pants because they can easily bite through spandex.
Furthermore, prepping your home for mosquito protection is actually a lot easier than it seems. Mosquitos like to breed in water, even one tablespoon of water can breed up to 300 mosquitos. This being said, try to eliminate excess water around the house such as, flower pots, garbage, and water bottles. If you have a pool there is no need to fret, because chlorine from the pool deters mosquitos. Also, if you are an avid outdoor exerciser, consider exercising indoors since mosquitos are attracted to heat and the body gets very hot when it is working out.
Lastly, if you are traveling somewhere with active Zika transmissions, be aware of your surroundings. Stay in air conditioning, sleep with a mosquito net, and always apply bug spray.
