This week, we are featuring InterCommunity Cancer Centers Dr. Alison Calkins. InterCommunity Cancer Centers have locations in Clermont, Leesburg, and Lady Lake to offer patients advanced care for the radiation treatment of cancer. Dr. Calkins sees patients out of their Leesburg office, working with Drs. Hal Jacobson, M.D, Herman Flink, M.D., and Maureen Holasek, M.D. Each of these physicians specializes in radiation oncology.
Originally from the New York metropolitan area, Dr. Calkins traveled to Berea, Kentucky to pursue her Bachelor’s degree in Biology from BereaCollege. She then earned her medical degree at Indiana University and completed her internship and residency at the Indiana University School of Medicine’s Radiation Oncology department. Dr. Calkins then began her career in academic medicine as a member of the faculty at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Here, she specialized in Gynecologic Oncology and Brachytherapy.
In 1992, Dr. Calkins moved to Tampa, continuing her efforts to bring advanced medical care to community cancer centers. She acted as Medical Director of Radiation Oncology, Chairman of the NCI Expanded Participation Project, and was also Chairman of the Institutional Review Board at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Dr. Calkins is board certified by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiology. She treats all kinds of cancers and is experienced in a variety of cutting edge treatments including:
InterCommunity Cancer Centers utilizes these treatments, in addition to:
- CT Scanning and Simulation
- Seed Implants (Low Dose Rate Brachytherapy)
- High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (HDR)
- Accelerated Partial-breast Irradiation (APBI)
Dr. Calkins has also authored a study of intrahepatic radioactive microsphere infusions for patients with metastatic breast cancer.
Dr. Calkins speaks Spanish fluently and is proficient in French. She has traveled extensively, including on horseback through the Silk Road of Central Asia. Her experience and expertise embodies her favorite saying “Life is not a dress rehearsal.”
