“A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination, but when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special.”
Education is one of the most valuable gifts a child can be given. It’s the foundation of everything, the cornerstone of our civilization and the channel through which we’re able to foster, inspire, and grow the leaders of the next generation. That being said, unfortunately education isn’t as accessible for everyone as it should be.
There are so many things we love about our community, but we also understand that there are certain areas where improvements could be made. Access to education is a huge one. Over 60% of the Lake County School District’s student population currently lives either at or below poverty level, and the Student Services Departments reports that there are over 2,600 students who are homeless. That means that there are over 2,600 students who regularly go hungry, who don’t have access to the basic school supplies we so often take for granted.
It’s a heartbreaking statistic, and it’s one we’re looking to help change! That’s why this year we’re teaming up with the Education Foundation of Lake County to participate in Red for Ed, an initiative that aims to “paint the county red in order to raise awareness about the critical need of our local students for the most basic items of food and school supplies”. Sounds awesome, right?
For the next few months until the end of July, we’ll be accepting donations at our center to give to students in need. We strongly encourage all of you to do whatever you can to help Red for Ed meet their goal of helping each student in need to start the school year with the essential supplies to help them be successful. We’re choosing to help by acting as one of the official collection sites for donations, but you can help too by donating supplies, donating cash online, or simply spreading the word with your family and friends!
The donation bins are officially open, and we can’t wait to see everyone’s donations rolling in! Here’s the list of items we need:
You can drop off your donations at our Clermont location Monday through Friday during business hours. If you’re interested in finding out how else you can help, check out the Red for Ed website for volunteer opportunities!
